Advent House Ministries is a member of the the Greater Lansing Homeless Resolution Network (GLHRN). Recently, the GLHRN completed a study about the homeless in Ingham County. This study revealed the number and demographic makeup of individuals served in 2006. These are the people we attempt to help on a daily basis.

In the 2006 report, Ingham County homeless agencies served 3,220 different homeless individuals. The Ingham County Homeless Profile shows that counter to many stereotypes, over half of the clients served are women and children, and 17.5% are two parent families. We are seeing more families even with both parents working, but because of the lack of good-paying jobs or adequate health care coverage, they cannot afford a home. We expect demand for our services to increase, and in light of current budget crises, are unable to accommodate everyone who needs help. (For an in-depth look at the Ingham County study, click here.)

According to economic data from the Michigan League for Human Services, Michigan has the highest unemployment rate of any state in the country, and almost 90,000 families were receiving cash grants, an increase of 15,000 since 2003. Likewise, 550,000 were receiving food stamps, an increase of almost 200,000 since 2003. These are key indicators that the services our organizations provide are going to be in greater demand, especially in the coming cold weather months.

Seeing these statistics, we ask ourselves, "Can we really end homelessness in ten years? Can we end it at all?" Advent House Ministries is one of 25 agencies in the Greater Lansing Area that is saying, "Yes, we Can!" This is our opportunity to alert the community to the plight of those in need, and have the community unite around the problem to show its support. You can help us by volunteering your time or with a financial gift. It doesn't have to be a lot; every little bit helps.

Thank you to all for your continued prayers and support!

Welcome
For the last twenty years, Advent House Ministries has served the Lansing community with invaluable programs and services. We provide food, temporary housing, employment assistance and a variety of family services to the economically disadvantaged.

The demand for homeless services is likely to remain static or rise with present economic conditions. This is an opportunity for the community to unite around the problem.–Susan Cancro, Executive Director of Advent House Ministries

Rooted in a tradition of community outreach from a faith-based perspective, we have built a solid relationship with those in need in our community. Each one who comes to us is accepted as he or she is and provided, through the resources in our programs, with an anchor of hope for the future. The process our guests go through here is about building trust. They open themselves up to us when they ask for help, and we trust them to work at making the right decisions about their lives. Our guests learn to trust us to help them help themselves. Ultimately, they learn to trust themselves.
