"Art for All" Receives Grant
Advent House Ministries has received a grant from the Capital Region Community Foundation for its “Art for All” project.
“Art for All provides homeless and other at-risk adults with an opportunity for creative self expression, which is a necessary building block for developing core social skills,” said Toni Townshend, Director of Literacy Programs. “These social skills are needed to successfully navigate life opportunities in education, employment and developing appropriate supportive relationships.”
Participants will have their artistic works displayed in Art Alley, located at 1133 S. Washington Ave. in REO Town, the first Sunday in November. A second exhibit at the Capital Area District Library Downtown Branch is tentatively scheduled for December, Townshend said.
Advent House Executive Director Susan Cancro says that Art for All serves as a gateway to other Advent House programs. “Art for All participants will gradually move on to our other offerings, such as our GED Academy or Job Club,” she said. “Once our guests have experienced success with self expression, they are prepared for further successes pursuing employment or further educational opportunities.” The overall goal is to get each guest to the point of self-sufficiency, Cancro said.
Westside Home Tour
Due to unforseen circumstances, the Home Tour has been cancelled for this year. We plan to resume next year in October 2012.
